Today, the Greek Parliament agreed with the former Republic of Macedonia Parliament's vote last week, and approved a contentious name change for the FYROM, to "North Macedonia". We have updated MTP accordingly. This vote ends a decades-old dispute between the neighbours, and opens the way for the ex-Yugoslav republic to join the European Union and NATO. The two votes went off despite massive protests in both Skopje and Athens, as both sides view the name Macedonia as integral to their respective identities, especially since the word 'Macedonia' carries such a strong connotation with the legendary general Alexander the Great.
We are now on AWS! We made the move from GoDaddy seamlessly overnight last night, and everything appears to be working fine; please let us know if you find any issues. AWS should bring performance and stability enhancements, and support us better as we grow.
This new release on AWS adds a couple of new features:
- Multi-country WHS: 37 WHS exist across multiple countries. MTP policy is that if you visit any one of them, the WHS counts. However, handling this situation technically is more difficult than it sounds. For example, the Struce Geodetic Arc (WHS #1187) has 34 locations across 10 countries, and the 17 works of Le Corbusier are spread across 7 countries and 3 continents from Argentina to Japan! Until now, we've had just one location represented in the checklist for each of these (Ukraine and Switzerland, respectively). But over the next days and weeks, we will add all locations, so that MTPers can understand the full range of possibilities to visit each WHS.
- Birthday Bug. Ever since we re-launched, we've had a weird birthday bug which displayed many people's birthday off by one day, especially if logged in through Facebook. This was due to a combination of Facebook protocol and time-zone handling, and should be fixed now. If your birthday isn't displaying correctly, just update it at https://mtp.travel/me/edit/ and scroll down to hit 'Save'.
Enjoy your weekend, and see you next week with more improvements!
